Filling Shoeboxes, One-by-One
Judy Volz has been a member of Sovereign Grace Church for twenty years and approximately fifteen of those years have been spent spearheading Operation Christmas Child (OCC) Shoebox Gift. Introduced to churches and groups around the country as a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, OCC shares God’s love with children in need around the world.
Judy became involved with OCC because she saw it as an opportunity to share God’s love in a practical, tangible way. She truly appreciates that this ministry allows us not only to share much needed items but also to share the Gospel with people in third-world countries who often have little access to the Gospel. Each shoebox contains a small booklet that shares “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” After receiving a shoebox gift, children are invited to enroll in The Greatest Story, a twelve-week bible study that guides them through what it means to follow the Gospel faithfully.
This year, Judy personally delivered 175 boxes filled by Sovereign Grace members with hygiene products, such as toothbrushes, wash clothes, tooth paste, as well as school supplies such as pencils, note pads, erasers, pencil sharpeners, small toys and even clothing. She shared with me that additional boxes from our church were delivered to other locations by church members. The 2017 goal of Samaritan’s Purse was 12 million shoeboxes sent to 100 different countries; what a joy to be a part of such a worldwide project! Those who attended Family Missions Day could find a large array of small gifts, selling for no more than $.50 to fill their shoeboxes. It was so heartwarming to see lots of children using their allowances to purchase gifts to fill their boxes.
Judy begins promoting OCC Shoebox Gift in October and delivers completed boxes no later than the third week of November. She invites everyone who did not participate in this year’s OCC to mark their calendars to pick up their shoeboxes in October of 2018!
